R85 and claiming for last year

I have just noticed that one of my BS passbooks shows tax deducted in 2006 when I sent them an R85 form to say I was a non taxpayer. I am due to have my book made up again, will they credit me for last year's deduction of tax or have I lost it?

    You won't have lost it.

There are 2 ways to deal with it.
Some BSs will be able to credit it back to you.

Other BSs will force you to claim it back off the Inland Revenue using an R40 form (you can download this from the internet).

The first way is obviously much easier and easier for you but I've had 2 cases where they've redused to credit and I've had to claim off the IR.

Firstly you need to contact them and investigate whether they actually received the form. Is it a case that they made a mistake in deducting tax or was the form never received?
Whether they credit it may depend on whether it was their fault or not.
If the Royal Mail lost your form then it's not really the fault of the BS.

Some BS have an agreement with the Inland Revenue that they can credit previously paid tax with a late R85 form. Others don't.

Obviously if the form was lost then you will need to fill a new one out for on-going interest.
