Don't worry, the wonder government have it all sorted. Start a panic about a fuel strike that is not even certain and hay presto everyone rushes to stock up on extra fuel even if it's not needed. Result lots of extra dosh straight in to the treasury coffers just before quarters end and no official return to recession. Isn't it good to be in the hands of such master planners

This is exactly what the cynic in me was thinking Mrs Bones.

In the spirit of doing my bit for the country, I'm off out to panic buy some pasties before the sun goes down later and it costs me 20% extra.
Should help bolster the spending figures.0 -
The government are blatantly taking the pi55 out of the population with their latest offerings of premier league dinners, imaginary fuel crisis and now there going after greggs.
Its almost like they want people to kick off isnt it;)
I wonder if water cannons will be included in the hosepipe ban.0 -
Desperate measures now by a government desperately trying to save face.
They are absolutely hell bent on not letting this country go into recession, on paper that is.
This is now turning out to be a case of absolute vanity from Osbourne, Cameron and co.
However we all know their policies have failed. They have failed to stimulate any confidence or growth in the UK economy with their policies and their stubborness to admit when they have got things wrong and unwillingness to change.0 -

To be fair, short of switching the UK over to Marxism and defaulting on all our debts I am not sure what of much significance they were meant to do.
They badly need to be saving our money by cutting Trident and stupid wars and tax breaks for the rich, rather than just cutting benefits and public services; but presumably everyone who voted for them knew what they were getting.
New Labour still deserve most of the blame for this imo.0 -
I'd be wary of going too far with these suggestions that it's all a conspiracy theory started by the government.
Come on now. Sure, it was a poor show by the government and the blunder with the jerry can will be embarrasing for a while. But that's all it amounts to. The political class having no idea of reality. That happens under every party. You are perfectly entitled to store petrol / diesel in a can. Just not a jerry can, and it's the word "jerry", an old word, which was used, which has been latched on to and taken to the absolute extreme.
Now, the reason I say we shouldn't go too far in suggesting this is a conspiracy theory, is that it leaves those suggesting it, open to me asking them if they really feel Unite would work with the government on a conspiracy.
Come on now. I understand the excitement. But the pretence that Unite would work with the Tories and Unite wouldn't already have told the papers about the government lying to us to get us to part with our cash is a a bit silly now, isn't it?0 -

The government react to whats happening around them as i see it, they saw a chance of not admitting we are in recession and took it.
Remove the word theory and you are just left with a conspiracy.
Cameron isnt clever enough to come up with something like this himself.0 -

I would too. I don't think the government have the brains to organise a conspiracy theory.
David Cameron can't even lie properly about where he bought a bloody Cornish Pasty much to Ed Millibands faux over excitement.
Lightweights all of them.0 -

Personally feel you are seeing far too much into a blunder.
It definately is a very poor blunder, and labour and it's supporters should take it as so and make as much of it as they wish.
But taking it too far, and going down the conspiracy theory route (in which you'd have to have Unite and the Tories working together on a pact that can never be broken) only serves to make labour and it's supporters look a little desperate, falling over themselves to take a gift and totally destroy it with their excitement.
A good thing can be taken too far. The good thing was the blunder. Taking it too far is the fantasy world liable stuff.0
