If you boil quite a concentrated vinegar solution once the smell of vinegar is gone it seems to have neutralised other smells.

Here's another one for you all...
We have oil (kerosene) rather than mains gas.
The fuel line leaked on the boiler causing kerosene to hit the tiled floor in the utility room. Having scrubbed the floor for 2 weeks with neat washing up liquid and then rinsing with bicarb of soda in hot water the smell will not shift. The window was open daily when the weather was fine but now snow has been coming down the window is closed. The room is used by the mogs who have a more keen sense of smell than us & they are quite upset by the smell so have to take their meals elsewhere. Any ideas ?

For the wok-sters in the first post...I make a stir fry most days but the extractor fan goes on, a window is open (when weather permits) & the washing up & cooker is cleaned down after the meal. The kitchen is thoroughly cleaned weekly. No one says the kitchen smells nasty!

Bicarb is so good for so much around the house. Anyone know where to get it in big quantities? I can only ever find it in piffly little amounts meant for baking.

Try your local independent pharmacy - they may be able to order industrial qties for you.

I do mean industrial - there may not be a size between 100g and 5kg :D

  • Someone once told me that orange peel absorbs smells. If we have had fish and chips or a takeaway in front of the TV I usually finish off the meal with an orange/tangerine and leave the peel out on a plate all night in the room. Next day there's no foodie smells. It works in the kitchen as well.

I usually get a 500g box of Dri-Pak bicarb. Hardware stores often stock it and I think it costs a couple of pounds.

Have a look on ebay, I always manage to find good quantities at decent prices. Make sure you check postage too!
