Applying for new job but current work is offering me more money.

I am asking on behalf of my Sister. Basically she works as a Learning Teaching Assistant in a local high school, she has been there for 2.5yrs and has gained valuable experience and become a key member of the team. She also volunteers to help after school activities. She is on just under 10k which has been pro rota-ed due to school holidays.
Recently she has seen a job at a local college offering 14k basic and she is wanting to apply, deadline being 6th April.
When she went to work today, word got round as she needed to ask for a reference. So the Headmaster asked her in his office to ask why. So she said it's better progress and more money. Anyway, she is due to see her in her office on Friday for a 'meeting' to offer more money. The Headmaster has stated that although money is tight, they can probably offer more money to keep her. He also mentioned to 'hold the application'.
I have advised her to continue applying for application and to think about whatever figure is given this Friday as she has 2 weeks Easter holidays coming up. I'm not sure what else to advise? She enjoys the job but there is no way of progressing. What is the best course of action?

She needs to move on as there is no future at her current job.0

She can wait to see what they say but she should still get her application in for the other job, there's no point (from her side of things) of putting that on hold as they request.
She might miss the application deadline and then they come back with a small or even no offer.
She needs to weigh both jobs against each other. She can't do that until she has the full info on both - also she may not even get an interview for the other one anyway (but of course she shouldn't tell current employer that). Ideal situation for her is to be sitting there with two job offers on her table to choose from.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
If she's already decided to look at moving on, then whatever they offer her probably won't be good enough. There is some research that says that if someone does stay, they are quite often then gone within a year (I don't have a reference for the research, so sorry it's a bit vague).
If she's worth more money now, why hasn't the employer being paying that already?0 -
If she is worth more money why are they not paying it now?
Are there any others that are underpaid, they need to know that there is money to pay them more.
there is the down side of moving that you lose continuity of employment.0 -
Thank you for your replies. I agree getting the full low down on the offer tomorrow will be important as to weigh out both jobs. I've told her to continue with application, as a back up. As for wanting to leave, she is happy at her place of work but it's just not enough money to live on and has never thought of asking for more pay due recent cuts. If they offered more with career progression, she'd be happy to stay. So will advise her to state this.
I've also told her to not give a definite answer tomorrow but to think over the Easter holidays.
Regards continuity of employment, think the trend is people move from job to job anyway.0 -
Okay they may offer her more money at her current place, but once she accepts it, whose to say she may never see another payrise for 5 years. There was a reason for looking elsewhere in the first place and unless that reason can be rectified then she really won't be happy staying.:)0

There are different grades of teaching assistants, but I thought you needed to have qualifications to progress up the scale. So maybe the head will talk about what qualifications are needed, how she might get them etc. But I've also heard about the research Wyndham mentions.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Correct about the differing grades so I think that a better pay offer will come with extra responsabilities . If not other teaching assistants will expect a pay rise too .
It may be that she is already doing these 'free' as part of her role in school and the Head will offer her a payment grade rise using these roles as proof of his case for a pay rise .0 -
Thank you for all your replies. Just thought I would give update, the Headmaster offered her a promotion if you can call it that, she will be given a new job title and a pay increase with increments each year. She has gone from earning 10k to 15.8k, pro rota-ed already. So, it's a good result!0
