Changing careers

As my user name indicates I have been in debt, this has started to affect me majorly in my current role - the whole handling money, taking money of people, even having to charge people, laying down terms and conditions etc right down to the resentment that I really simply don't make enough money each month to live, never will and the fact every day we're to be 'grateful' we're in jobs because as far as my trade goes we've never recovered from the recession... then there is colleagues knowing my very personal business and what they think, I just feel lousy, each day has become a very familiar slog and can't go on

So I am considering a whole different line of work (is that so crazy) and wonder how I should approach it, it's been a long time since I went for interviews should I just be totally honest about why I'm looking for a unconnected career path

I also worry about when it comes to references - the only good thing is I'll definately pass the CRB check and there's no credit checks! :rotfl:

Guess just seeking opinions :o

Not knowing your age, current job, qualifications and sort of job you'd want makes it hard to give an opinion.

Ask yourself one simple question, what can you offer a new employer when you have no experience of that kind of work and you want him to pay you more than your current employer.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Not quite what I was asking. Talk about reading and assuming what you want.

Think I'll work it out it by going back to the basic's whilst remembering 'be the change you want to be'

    Thanks. I'm sorry I posted

Just because you had a reply which wasn't exactly what you were asking, there's no need to be rude. You won't endear people to respond to you if you're sarcastic to those taking their time to reply!

  • I didn't really think I deserved a sarcastic reply as per post no.2 , which wasn't even based on what I was asking in the first place, again thanks.

How would you expect someone to respond? or are we so 'belittled' we must not say anything?

My reply was not sarcastic, it was designed to make you think!

You asked for opinions. As you're probably well aware there are far more people than jobs. Any employer will want the best he can get, often people with experience in that particular field. So what can you offer?

Have you got any skills that would be useful in another career, e.g. sales experience with proven track record, computer literate, technical qualifications, time served apprenticeship?

You're currently not earning enough, so if you need to retrain, you may not get any grants or funding, so how would you survive?

Without knowing what you currently do and earn, what you are looking to do and earn, it's very difficult to advise.

Judging by the posts on here, I'd worry about interview techniques when (or even "if") you get called for one. Most posters don't get even get interviews.

It wasn't a sarcastic reply but the truth.

I had a 16 year career as a lorry driver which came to an end in 2008 due to a spinal injury. I had to ask the same question that was in the second post. I looked at what I had done in the past and applied for a few jobs. One was a technical role in something I'd not done for 20 years but the various skills I'd picked up obviously made me an ideal candidate as out of 300 applicants, 6 of us got interviewed and I was offered the job but had to decline due to my spinal injury getting worse.

I have a job interview for a customer service job at a Volvo main dealers on Thursday. Last time I did anything like that was well over 2 decades ago but in my written application I listed skills I had.
