Thanks, good idea, one of the best I've seen on MSE. Double cream is often half price at my Co-Op and sometimes 10p at Asda when they do their reductions. Will definitely do this if I get cheap cream.

My local Asda is rubbish at reductions no matter what time of day or night I go in.

To be honest, I don't bother measuring (creates unnecessary washing up). Chuck cream in a bowl and add water out the tap and keep testing until I get it thinned down to my liking. For cereals I go for a 3:1 ratio. My maths is probably wrong; my tastebuds are not. It doesn't have quite the same taste as milk out the carton, but for the amount of money it saves me over the course of a year, it's good enough.

We buy our milk at costco- 2 four pints for only £1.49 :)
  • A tip. Should you add too much water (very easily done), milk powder is the answer.

Usually I am content to just read posts and rejoice that there are others who are as thrifty and as wise to a bargain as myself; so here's my once-a-year post.

    4pt/2.27l whole milk (3.6gms fat per 100ml) is £1.00. 1 litre is 44p.

A 600ml pot of Tesco Double Cream (50.5gms fat per 100ml)is £1.50 in the current buy 2 for 3.00 offer.

By watering the cream down to bring the grams of fat per 100ml to roughly the same as the milk is much cheaper than buying milk outright.

Add 8400ml of water to the cream to make 9000ml total. 100ml now has 3.3gms of fat. The better news is that milk made this way is a little more than 16p a litre.

Ask friends and family for empty milk cartons, screw the tops on tight and freeze.

If you are one of them strange types that insists on drinking semi-skimmed or skimmed milk, add more water and it will work out even cheaper.

I find this a perfectly adequate substitute, but to ensure that you don't waste a whole pot of cream, do a tester by taking 100ml of cream and add enough water to make 1500ml. I only make it up to 8000ml but it is still cheap.

This is a great idea , does it taste ok ? How would u ensure that it is mixed ok ?

I'm trying to get my head around it but quite fancy giving it a go

I have to say that the Duchy organic milk (full fat version, of course) is the NICEST milk I have had in years and about the only one I can actually drink by the glass and really enjoy. It tastes like I remember milk tasting when I were a nipper! So if you can find it at anything less than full price I suggest you snap it up!

I also loved the Rachels full fat milk but I can't seem to find it anymore locally :(

  • I've just had a quick look on mySupermarket.co.uk and I can see that Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Ocado are also offering the same deal on semi skimmed Organic milk - 8 pints for £3 (works out at 6.6p/100ml) but if you don't mind about it being Organic then Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's are also doing a deal for regular fresh semi skimmed milk - 8 pints for £2 (which works out as 4.4p/100ml).

So the interesting thing here is that I then went to have a look at the cheap supermarket UHT milk in Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco it is 49p litre as you said but if you calculate that as per 100ml it actually works out as 4.9p/100ml which is more expensive than buying the regular semi skimmed milk!

You have to be so careful when calculating costs against pints and litres! So confusing! That's why I tend to always check out prices using mySupermarket first to see what the best deal is per 100g or 100ml, It's all calculated already where they write their prices so I don't need to actually calculate anything myself! Maths is not my strongest point!

Welcome hannah, yes these sneaky supermarkets seems always to be looking to do us but I'd always figured that UHT milk was cheaper and have been buying it for years so thanks for highlighting that

Will be getting OH to prowl supermarkets locally to find the cheapest milk for himself now.

I've just switched to Lactofree and the price can differ 14p per litre between supermarkets :(
