DJ Decks for Beginners

I want to buy some DJ Decks as a present for a beginner friend, does anyone have any ideas as to how much they would be and what type to recommend.

Cheers,

Don't get belt drive ones, you want to get direct drives. Is it just as a hobby that they want them, or are they looking to get into djing properly?

Although if they're looking to progress and get into doing it properly then they're going to have to buy decent ones at some point, technics 1210s are the industry standard - so maybe it woul dbe more financially sensible to just buy the technics (well not yourself but you could give money towards then?) rather than end up buying 2 lots of decks.

What kind of music will they be wanting to mix?

It is for a hobby and the type of music they will be mixing will vary greatly i would imagine

As the industry is increasingly going digital you might want to consider CD decks as well...

I was going to mention this too, but didn't want to confuse matters - and also didn't know if it was just for a hobby or not either. :)

CD Decks are good, but i guess it depends if they want the look and feel of vinyl.. even though vinyl is more expensive.

Can download mp3s cheaply (legally) now from plenty of places and stick them all on cds which are cheap too.

    No worries.

One place i don't recommend is HTFR.com as they're usually much more expensive than most places.

Was wondering about the type of music because i didn't know if you needed to think about scratching and stuff, but if it's mainly just mixing and as a hobby then just a basic set of decks should do you fine.

  • Richer Sounds are always worth looking at for direct drive turntables. it's always worth looking in their "graded" section at your local branch. They have a web site as well (www.richersounds(I'm not sure if it's .com or .co.uk, but if you Google it you'll find it.))
Maplins might be worth looking at as well.
If you go for something in classified ad papers like Loot, Friday-ad and Diamond free-ads etc look for Technics 1200/1210 series turntables or similar.
