What happens to your reference if a company goes into admin/goes bust/taken over?

I have been out of work for quite sometime now due to personal circumstances but I'm currently actively job seeking. My last employer was GAME and as I'm sure everyone knows they have recently gone into administration. It might be worth contacting HR department at Game and asking them to supply you with a written reference now on a to whom this may concern type basis.

I wouldn't be worrying to much over it though because as it is over 8 years since you worked there I am not sure how interested a new employer would be in a reference off them. I know when I have recruited I have wanted references more current than that.
