Need to buy a kilt

- need to get a kilt for a wedding - it's the wallace one (think it's dark green) - does anyone know whether there are any places in the Berkshire or London area at all please?

- don't need it in a hurry - it's for a wedding in the summer

- any help would be great please! have seen some on ebay for about £50 but have never bought anything from there before

Google will reveal thousands of hire shops BUT two thirds of them are in the former colonies !

Buying a kilt will cost an arm and a leg, you need the extras, see below.

Unless you are a native of north of the border, you might upset local sensibilities, unless you wear "blackwatch, royal stuart or hunting stuart".

Moss Bros do a selection but expect to pay the best part of 100++GBP per day. There is a postal service at half the price (google will find it for you), based on you supplying your own measurements. Watch out for your hem length ! Moss Bros do a good book (free) on etiquette
to promote their hire service.

There are side issues, don't forget you need the trappings as well.

Once you are north of the border, prices as low as 35 GBP per day are quoted
in Glasgow.

The hire shops usually have an offer like:- hire 4 get the fifth one free. The more of you that club together the more negotiating power you have.

As I was involved in organising the wedding. I was able to order the kilt on a visit a month before the wedding, pick it up on the Friday before the wedding on a Saturday and give it to a local to return on the Monday. Cost about 60GBP.

Terrific practical gear, much better than dressing up as a Harley street reject.

Surely you are not the only one getting kitted up. Where are the other guys getting theirs from.

The fabric alone is going to cost quite a bit, so chances are Ebay is your best bet. Be careful if you're buying abroad. Most people have a good experience, some do not. Check out the feedback.

If you're really desperate, I have a sewing pattern somewhere for a mens kilt, but I will not be able to sew it for you, and unless you know a tailor, they are not cheap. By the time you paid for the work and the fabric it would probably cost more than a hire.

I'd recommend reading up on how to wear it too--we are terribly stuck up when the laces on the shoes aren't done up right, or most definitely worse, if the kilt is the wrong length:eek: .

But- apart from that,anything goes as far as the choice of tartan goes...choose which one you like, it goes down the maternal line for clan allegiance, but there are football tartans, tartans for visitors etc. etc. the list goes on.

The all black kilt is commonly called a skirt by the menfolk who own their own kilt, but I personally think it quite smart looking option for someone who is not Scottish to wear.

I bought kilts for my sons on a recent trip to Edinburgh , they are just basic quality and cost me £20 each. The same shop sells them on ebay for around the £25 mark, but I can't work out which of the sellers is it as the names don't tally.
