Night Out in Newcastle, Co Down

A few of us (men-45-55) are going to Newcastle over Easter to play golf and we are staying close to the promenade in Newcastle. Can anyone advice of lively pubs to go to at the weekend where there is a bit of music and atmosphere and where it will not be full of young people (verging on the grumpy old man here).

Thanks
Val :)

i think Quinn's is one of the best. Daughter and SIL go on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and some drinks
  • what about starting there and heading onto somewhere like the Anchor Bar and O'Hares at the bottom of the town?
P.s Quinns can be really young - fri night are worse than sat nights but im 27 and feel a bit old in it! (as does my 23 yr old brother lol).
If your willing to go slightly further afield theres always the Maghera Inn or Maginns in Castlewellan.

Enjoy your weekend up this end of the county

Would not recommend Quinn's for men aged 45-55. Quinn's is geared towards the 'young and lively' with 18-20 year olds on a Friday night and 18-28 on a Saturday night. Not the age group to suit your group. Could try O'Hare's front bar and age group would be from 25-45 with a live band playing but Maghera Inn is a lovely rural bar with live music every Saturday night and has all ages with people having food and sitting on listening to the live music with a lively crowd at the bar area. Percy French and the Harbour Bar are other options but don't know if they live live music. A quick phone call to both or pick up the local newspapers, Mourne Observer and Down Recorder, on arrival for a quick look at what's on in local bars.
    Hope this helps.

Stay away from Quinns if you are looking somewhere not full of youngsters.I would recommend the Anchor Bar, at the bottom of the town - or maybe the Donard (Haven't been in a few years so not sure whats it like now)Maginns in Castlewellan is full of youngsters at the weekend as well, so stay aay from it too. Maghera Inn is hit and miss (Its my local!), some saturday nights, its great reasonably busy, a bit of music, others there is no-one in it.As someone else said pick up a copy of the Mourne Observer and you will see what is on.
