after a recent night out with 10 people, we decided to have a "kitty"
everyone put £20 which lasted more than halfway through the night,
then everyone put in another £20 each,

shortly after this 5 out of the 10 people said goodnight and went home with no mention or concern about the money which was left in the kitty, which at the time would have been well over £100

the remaining 5, myself included, had a few more round of drinks leading up to last orders,

as the last drinks of the night were paid for by the kitty, the kitty still had £70 left in it,,, should:

A) the person who was controlling the kitty keep the £70 what's left (leaving him £30 up and pretty well oiled)

B) the kitty should be divided between the 5 people still there and left at that,

C) the person in charge of the kitty should be trusted and expected to divide it by 10 and eventually catch up with every member of the original 10 and give them £7 each, even though it may be take a few months before he see's each person again

at the end of the night after half the original members had already gone home, should 17 votes

    Definitely not A.

    Possibly B.

Not really C - too much hassle, unless he can pay everyone via internet banking.

How about, divide by 10. Pay back immediate people that he will see and donate the rest to charity.

It partly depends who the members of the group are relative to each other.

  • Definetly not A, I was torn between B and C, but C seems pretty complicated for the sake of 7 quid each so I chose B.
  • divide it by who's left unless it's easy to repay the others (e.g you are colleagues and will see each other the next week). Not A. It's kinda stealing.

If you're going out with the same people again use that one as the starter kitty towards your next night out.

    You forgot D

D Hold onto the kitty and add it to the next night out (assuming the group is roughly the same people next time)

  • e mail everyone with 2 choices - they get one tenth of the kitty or you give it to charity (name a couple).
  • agree with this option:
email everyone with 2 choices - they get one tenth of the kitty or you give it to charity (name a couple).
  • Do the decent thing - either agree to give to a) charity b) give it back or c) buy something that all can benefit from. There's a difference between have £5 left over and £70 which is a chunk! To take it is out of order.

That's what I would do for the next time the ten of you go out. If that's not for the foreseeable future I would see if I could give everyone their £7 back or I would call each of them and say I've got£7 of yours here left over from the kitty do you want it or do you want me to donate it x
