Have taken loratidine 10 mgs for years, but they will obviously take a few days to get into my system, started taking them yesterday. I use one of the electric infra red devices and I have to say it really has helped me. Though my hay fever is relatively mild compared to others I think.

I'd just suggest the basics really.

Keep your hair tied back and wash it frequently.
    Wash your pillow cases frequently.
Keep your windows shut during the day
Keep an eye of the forecast for high pollen counts
Don't line dry clothes during the day
Check if there is a better route to work etc if there are gardens/trees that you have to walk past normally, can you avoid them?

On particularly bad days I shower immediately on getting home and change my clothing.

I use throat lozenges (the kind for coughs and colds) to numb my throat to help with the itch, cold drinks/ice cream can also help numb the irritation. Resist the urge to rub your eyes you'll just be making the problem worse. A cold flannel over your eyes can give a bit a relief if you can be bothered but don't rub at your eyes through the cloth :p

Not likely to relevant to many but could you swap your day around a bit and, for example, be more active either early morning or late at night when the counts are likely to be lowest and your symptoms least.

Oral antihistamines can take a couple of days to kick in but if you don't feel the benefit over the next day or two try a different type. I might as well be taking tic tacs when I take loratidine! but I get some relief with cetirizine.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

I also take the loratidine anti-histamines, they're the only ones I ever found that work.

I have however found a nasal spray that you can use alongside your oral anti-histamines. It's by pirinase and is about £7 from Boots although not sure about other places. It has an orange top on the bottle and you spray two spritzes in each nostril in the morning and that's you for the day.

It does take a few days to start working fully but I found it great - I started using it last year and was symptom free all summer - even able to spend a weekend camping!

Eating locally produced honey is supposed to help your system get used to the pollen.

This is exactly correct - a beclometasone nasal spray used twice a day, in both nostrils regularly will stabilise your symptoms (eyes and nose) within a week and you may well be able to do without the loratadine.

    Yes, started already.

It varies from person to person. I've always had hayfever, but usually mild. The last few years however, have been awful. I had to get a prescription from the doc in the end, as the other the counter stuff just wasn't cutting it. Even then, I had to try a few different ones to find one that was effective, without making me nauseous all day!

I also tried the infra red nasal thingy, but it only works when my symptoms are mild, so it's been useless the last couple of years :(

On the subject of nasal sprays, most people don't use them properly. When I changed my technique I noticed an enormous reduction in my symptoms.

need some help here folks .Chemist4u.com are advertising loads of hayfever remedies with free postage ,but.................when you try to order them it adds hefty postage .I queried this with them last week and the reply was' unless you have placed an order then we have not breached any trading laws as we have no contract with you to supply goods at a set price' but surely the are breaking trading standard laws by advertising something which clearly doesnt exist ???
