Representation during grievance at work

Can anyone advise me or point me in the right direction please?

If an employee does not have a union and there is no colleague available or willing to accompany them or represent them during a grievance can the employee be accompanied by a family member or friend?

Not usually! However each employer has their own rules so they should tell you.

Thanks, however, the employer is saying no, which is why I am asking, particularly as the grievance is about discrimination, I think the employee already feels intimidated.

Most companies allow people in to take notes but no one can speak up for anyone in a grievance procedure only to witness. I have been through many and never had my witness speak out for me.
