Playstation 3

Hello!,

I have pre ordered 2 x ps3s, however i am thinking of cancelling the pre orders after learning that the eu ps3s are going to be inferior to the US/JAP.

Luckily (i think) my sister is going to america soon, would she be able to bring one back for me, 2 things:

would she have to declare it?

would you have to pay customs duty/tax its only 1 ps3, not bulk buying

and its a 'gift' doesnt that make it exempt to tax?

thanks

  • What the o.p was referring to is the recently highlighted PS3 shortcomings in its backwards compatibility in the European PS3 as opposed to the U.S and Japanese versions.

Long story short this means that you wont be able to play as many PS2 games on your PS3 as you can with the U.S versions. (Despite us paying more for it but thats another story)

With regards to region locking Bluray movies are ALL region free.

Im Unsure on games though tbh.

  • But the reason why it can't is because it will have newer hardware and firmware.
2p off is still 2p off!
  • I`m not sure but i think the ps3 will be similer to the 360. in that there are downloads avalible online to make it backwards compatible.which meens after buying the console you then pay for an internet acount and then pay for a download so you can play your old games. such a rip off.

  • The U.S and Japanese models have a PS2 chip inside meaning that 98% of ps2 games will work on it whereas (for some bizarre reason) the European models are relying on emulation software instead.

And reading through some press releases from SCEE it doesnt look like they are gonna put any effort into making the backwards compatibility any better.

  • so is it better to try get a usa ps3 and i agree it is one big rip off the price of it you don't get a game either it just wrong but sadly companies like this know they can get away with it I remember when you used to buy things like this you used to get at least one game same with printer when u got printer u used to get all cables with it not now tho.

  • I honestly dont know if the games are region free.

If you can get a close look at a game box when your in the U.S look out for any clues regarding region locking.

For example PS2 and xbox games have either "NTSC" (U.S) or "PAL" (Europe) although this may not be the case with bluray.

If it turns out the games are region free get a U.S model for sure :D (or better yet get a 360 ;) )

The only difference is between the US/Jap & European versions are the backwards compatibility.

If you buy a US/Jap unit, you wont be able to play any of the UK PS1/PS2 games.
You will be able to play UK PS3 games (Region free games).
You wont be able to watch UK Blue Ray Movies ( Region Coded).
If you have to declare your unit and pay tax, it will become very expensive.
You wont have any warranty on the unit.
