I wanna make a Mirror from a cable reel

Hey
I've seen these mirrors from recycled cable reels

and my girlfriend think they're bloody amazing.
I really want to make one big and fancy, as if i wanted to buy one it would set me back at least £250. But I also have loads of ideas to make it even better.
Now where could I go for advice on building one of these, and where can I get a 48inch wooden cable wheel (for free or very cheap) in Newcastle? I was also wanting tp put lights in the frame but I wondering about wiring and actual implementing. Any good forums for this sort of thing.
I thought I'd tap the creative wisdom of the MoneySavers.
