  • violin starts! my credit rating is terrible. basically i owe about 7.5k most on an hfc loan and a bit on credit card and o/d. having been seriously ill after getting back from travelling i just ignored everything for about a year but kept in contact with creditors who were fairly reasonable. i paid what i could when i could but now having had my account closed by barclays and struggling to get a new bank account i just want a loan to pay it all off. i am self employed now and working all the time and can afford to pay back but everyone is asking for their money in full now and i just wanna get shot of it all! having been refused a current account surely iv'e no chance of getting a loan? violin stops!

OK, firstly, you CAN get a basic bank account, try citibank or the natwest "step" account.

Secondly, I you're unlikely to get a loan and if you did find somewhere to lend you the money it would be at a very high interest rate and so more debt in the long term.

Finally, don't panic, £7.5K is not the end of the world and can be paid off, how quickly depends on how much you earn and how you go about paying it off.

Get yourself over the the debt-free wannabe board for advice, you'll need an SOA (statement of affairs) covering debts and all your income and outgoings, and you'll get good advice from the peeps over there.

One route you can take is to go to the citizens advice bureau for help, they should be able to help in freezing interest (if it's not already frozen) and then you can pay it off quicker and gradually repair your credit rating. Your creditors may be demanding full payment, but you can't give what you don't have and if you are paying something it is unlikely to get to court action stage.

    Good Luck.
