Why do you think it is worth restoring when the personal allowance is going to be up to that level within a very short period?

Because the age related allowance was always over and above - extra to - the personal allowance.

    And why should this be?

I have not signed the petition because I believe it is right for people at the lower end of the income scale, people on the minimum wage for instance, to be taken out of the tax bracket altogether if possible. It is iniquitous that younger people feel they are 'better off on benefits'. I have people at the younger end of my family who are employed but struggling. I have the greatest sympathy for them, and I agree with dunstonh.

The petition is calling for the "restoration of Age Related Benefits", so that would not affect the personal allowance being proposed by this government for younger people and on low incomes.

There's a direct relationship between the above indexation increase in the basic PA and the freeze on the age related PAs. It was always going to happen from the outset of the £10k promise for the basic PA.

The 'budget starter' by the tax simplification group that the Chancellor decided to pick up on simply advanced it.

  • Hi

Not quite got my head around this topic, perhaps fellow posters can help me with a fundemental question.:

Why should the level of income you can enjoy before you start to pay tax be dictated by the number of candles on your birthday cake?

Sure, it's not great that the age related allowance will be frozen for some and not be given to others but surely it should be based on your income and not your age. For example why should Paul McCartney (for example) start to pay tax later than a single mother in her twenties struggling to bring up a child on her own and hold down a job?

It was never guaranteed that the age related allowance would all be available and it just so happens that this time around pensioners are the group being hit.

It was terrible politics announcing this at the same time as the 50p tax rate reduction, but that doesn't necesserily make the decision wrong.

Funny isn't it, that no mention was made before the election. if it had there would be no Con/Dem government.

Perhaps that's because the 94 page document that, among other things, suggested this (because pensioners don't understand it) ..... is dated March 2012.

bobpat I can assure you that I will miss out on this but knowing it would happen would not have changed my vote.

Sadly there are those who would vote for any party that offered them a tenner but not I think as many as your comment infers.

Where do you sign if you are against restoration of it???

You don't sign anywhere, you just sit back and wait to see what happens. This isn't a matter of a Tenner as you say, but considerably more of a loss to many people who could use the extra just to try to live a reasonable lifestyle, without asking for state handouts.

The petition is up to 33,223 now so goodly numbers are upset by this latest government action.
