I agree with the post above. Children don't leave dogs alone and no matter how trustworthy the dog it will bite if it gets fed up. I've trained a few rotties and they always seem to be one step ahead of you. They're quick on the uptake and very trainable. They don't take kindly to anyone pushing them around and they don't always give a warning when they're reaching their limit of tolerance. They aren't the sort of dogs you would want next door if you have children. I would find somewhere else to live otherwise you'll be constantly worrying about the dog.
    Don't mess with pensioners.

I would like to make the point that many dog owners in the past, when their dog has attacked someone, do often say, he/she has never gone for anyone before, it was totally out of the blue.
Even dolcile dogs can turn, though don't as a rule, sometimes people get bitten by mistake in a game. My point is that a big, docile dog making a mistake can be a big mistake.
My other query is that if the neighbour was trying to put across how good her dog was, wouldn't she instantly calm the dog down, show how easy it is to control and be keen for you to like it if she were a dog lover?

Exactly. I am on 100% on the side of the OP here, and I am a dog lover. If you want to sign the lease, ie if you want to make this your home, I don't see why the dog should prevent you from doing so. Since when are dogs' rights more important than people?

I am in a similar position. I moved into a flat in a four-property cul-de-sac recently, and one of my neighbours has a bulldog which has taken an intense dislike to me. Whenever I walk past it flies at me barking furiously. Last year, it attacked me and bit my finger. Yesterday is atacked me by flinging it's little body at me and biting me in the stomach -- luckily I was wearing a thick coat. The owners are very nice people and I have not wanted to provoke neighbourly discord -- they were here before me, all the neighbours get on well, etc etc. I have not spoken to them since yesteday's attack, but something has to happen to protect me, and they have to do it, otherwise they will be reported to the police. In your case, it's better for it to happen BEFORE you or a child get bitten.

The owners profess that "he's a very friendly dog" and "he's never done this to anyone else", ie, it's somehow my fault. Many dog owners are like this, and it's just not right. Making friends with the dog doesn't always work. I "made friends" with that bulldog on several occasions, stroked its head etc while the owners held it -- next time it saw me, it still attacked.

    Just a quick point

My parents dog used to poke its head through a hole in the fence to bark at the neighbour on one side whenever he was in the garden.

The reason she did this was because he gave her treats when he first moved in to make friends with her. Problem was that she had barked at him and then he gave her the treats. She would therefore always bark at him when he came outside, and he would always give her treats to 'make friends'.

She learnt that if she barked at him she got treats, and so she always barked at him.

The neighbour the other side just ignored her, and never got a barking hello!
