Cheapest place for frying oil (sunflower especially)?

Hey guys just wondering where the best deals for frying oil are? I have a deep fat fryer and I tend to use sunflower oil as it's supposed to be the healthiest oil you can fry with.
At the moment the cheapest I've seen is at LIDL, where it's £1.23 for a litre bottle. Anyone seen cheaper then this?
I'm open to using other oils if the price is right, though I try to find ones with a high amount of mono-unsaturated fats as it means they're not so bad for clogging up the arteries.

Tescos have 2 x 5 litres for £10.
Which is errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr £1 per litre0 -
Ethnic supermarkets are usually the best place for this - and lots of other things. If you have one nearby, of course. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

Yes, apparently you're right, frying with sunflower oil is one of the healthier options along with rapeseed and olive oil. I believe olive oil is the healthier option though, and believe it or not olive oil actually taste nice cooking with as well, I've even tried cakes cooked with olive oil, they taste much more superior than cooking with butter, a bit expensive though albeit healthier.

Anyway, Pounland were selling 1L bottles of sunflower oil and vegetable oil. You could try there if you have any stores near you.
Or
Cereol Pure Sunflower Oil (10L) currently 2 for £19 (95p/Litre) at Tesco until 21/04/2012.
And the Tesco offer pointed out by Angela is for sunflower oil though ends tomorrow 27/03/2012.0 -
I use Extra Virgin olive oil all the time. It's not suitable for a deep-fat fryer though as it has a low smoke point.0

I'm glad you said that Waynoo, tis true that heating sunflower oil changes its' molecular structure and makes it less healthy. The info is plainly there in the Manual of Nutrition yet manufacturers get away with all their claims - I can only assume that's because on the shelf it's not cooking
However, generally, mentioning that sunflower oil is less healthy gets stomped on in the same way that everyone *knows* that fat makes you fat and cholesterol-rich food gives you a cholesterol problem...:(
However I'd take sunflower oil over blended vegetable oil any day, myself. I suggest OP looks in Poundland or 99p Stores. Also, Lidl is selling litre bottles of olive oil for 2.99 from 29 March but to reiterate no good for deep fat frying unless you want house to stink of burnt oil !0 -
This is quite interesting:
Sunflower oil is high in the essential vitamin E and low in saturated fat. The two most common types of sunflower oil are linoleic and high oleic. Linoleic sunflower oil is a common cooking oil that has high levels of polyunsaturated fat. It is also known for having a clean taste and low levels of trans fat. High oleic sunflower oils are classified as having monounsaturated levels of 80% and above. Newer versions of sunflower oil have been developed as a hybrid containing linoleic acid. They have monounsaturated levels lower than other oleic sunflower oils. The hybrid oil also has lower saturated fat levels than linoleic sunflower oil.

Eating food fried in olive or sunflower oil is not linked to heart disease or premature death, finds a paper published in the British Medical Journal online.

And:
A high consumption of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are found in most types of vegetable oil, including sunflower oil, may increase the likelihood postmenopausal women may develop breast cancer. A similar effect was observed on prostate cancer - however, the study was performed on mice. Another study indicated that, when heated to frying temperature for extended periods, sunflower oil produces aldehydes, which may be associated with some neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's).

Also,
Researchers from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU, Spain) have been the first to discover the presence of certain aldehydes in food, which are believed to be related to some neurodegenerative diseases and some types of cancer. These toxic compounds can be found in some oils, such as sunflower oil, when heated at a suitable temperature for frying.

Make your own mind up. However, those who are concerned about cholesterol for example, the best advice appears to be moderation, a varied diet and/or change in diet. Don't over do it on the chips in other words.
Changing from an unhealthy diet to a healthy diet can reduce a cholesterol level. However, dietary changes alone rarely lower a cholesterol level enough to change a person's risk of cardiovascular disease from a high-risk category to a lower-risk category. However, any extra reduction in cholesterol due to diet will help. A healthy diet has other benefits too apart from reducing the level of cholesterol. See cholesterol fact sheet above.0 -
we use our deep fat fryer only for chips and only use dripping in ours
a good shake and no fat clings to the chips
gorgeous0 -
Another vote for dripping here, although that's not cheap these days either.0
