Anyone help with self assessment tax return?

Hello

I wondered if anyone could help explain what happens after your tax return?

Husband was self employed for about 3 weeks at the end of the tax year, so had to do his self assessment return. For those weeks he paid 20% tax to his UTR. Before that he was employed, so paid tax through PAYE.

When we did the return online, it said he owes £34. We couldnt find any other clarification of what this meant, so we just assusmed that they would send confirmation of everything in the post. However we havent received anything.

I've told hubby to telephone and ask what happens as it was his first return and he isnt sure, he just says lets wait!

What we are not sure about is, does that mean we owe £34 on top of what he paid whilst employed and what he paid to his UTR? or £34 from the 3 weeks he was self employed and therefore we are due a return?

Can anyone help clarify?

Many thanks

So your OH was self-employed for a few weeks in March 2011? (Is he still self-employed? Or is he now employed and paying tax through PAYE?) He completed an online self-assessment tax return for 2010/11 before the end of January 2012, and it told him that he owed £34? If that is the case, he should have paid that £34 before 31 January 2012, and it is now overdue so he should pay asap. If he logs back into his account online, that should give all the information about what he owes and how to pay it. Don't wait for letters to arrive in the post.

Edited to say - or maybe if he is employed and paying PAYE tax he has arranged to pay the underpaid tax through his tax code over the next year? http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/payinghmrc/taxcode-vdp.htm Either way, better to chase it up and make sure you understand exactly what is happening, and get it sorted!
  • Ok thanks that sounds correct.

He is the type of person that leaves everything to the last minute and doesnt chase things up....hence me trying to find answers out! He was self-employed up until December. I will be on at him to get his return in as early as possible this time around!

    Many thanks

He was self-employed until December? Do you mean December 2011?
You had me at your proper use of "you're".
  • In order to have the underpayment coded the return has to be filed by 30th December.
