I use Noddle to check my report - its free! I used to use Experian but paying that amount each month was just silly!
  • Whats Noddle? Hi no its just a normal current account. Why is the 'credit score' pointless? It just rubbish?

I was going to say if you have a fee paying RBS/Natwest current account you can access your experian credit report for free.

Noddle (also previously called callcredit) is one of the 3 credit referene agencies in the UK. You can get free reports from noddle all the time. For experian and equifax you can get the free trial once, then you have to pay.

Noddle can certainly be worth checking because its free, but its the smallest of the 3 agencies and your data is typically different with all 3 agencies. What a potential lender sees depends on which agency they search.

Credit score - its not really indicative as to whether you will be accepted for credit. Lenders never see the score from the agency, they see the data on your statutory report and use that to make a decision.
There are plenty of people who report having a 999 excellent score but who are unable to get credit from almost everywhere (eg people who have never had any credit can have a 999 score - but to lenders they are high risk as they have no history of repaying debts). Potential lenders consider far more information than just what is held by the credit ref agencies when deciding whether or not to lend.

  • Hi,

Could anyone advise me on how I sign up to check my report with Experian for free with an RBS account?

I am with Natwest and pay for an Advantage Gold account, I signed up to Experian's free trial recently as I moved and got behind on a few of my direct debits so wanted to check what effect this had on my credit and I noticed a couple of days ago Credit Expert had taken my first months £14.99 as I forgot to cancel!

    Thanks

I think it's suspicious that the Experian system didn't work for the statutory credit report ... but do work for signing up for too much money a month! I think there should be a complaint to the regulator about this -- you have to pay to call to get 'online report'. From other forum comments, I see this is a common problem.

I got this message when I tried to get my £2 report:

We're sorry, the system is temporarily unavailable. Please contact Equifax Customer Care on 0844 335 0550 (Calls will be charged at 5p per min from a BT landline, charges from other networks may vary and from mobile phones cost significantly more) between between 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week. We apologize for any inconvenience.

And yet this system is completely available to sign up to the monthly service. So I will sign up to this, then cancel within the free period, but it's a pain and I think this at best poor management and at worst a cynical 'bait and switch' on the part of the company.
