CV Advice

2mths into my new job and I've been made redundant. Not just me - it's cost cutting across the businee. A planned expansion was undermined by poor results from a period of business that I had no influence upon. :(

I now find myself looking for work in a saturated market - high number of insolvencies recently mean there are a load of people looking for work just now.

I worried though that any prospective employer is going to see I've been at one of the leading companies in my sector and made redundant after 2mths. Any advice what my approach should be in my CV?

thanksinadvance

Just be truthful, if you are going for a job in the same sector they will know the situation with your ex-employer. Some companies still practse last in first out.
  • Just state the truth - but make sure that your CV is top notch - achievements not just tasks against each job.

Why not state - "Selected for role from X amount of candidates but sadly made redundant due to large restructure"
  • I've had a lot of short term jobs, which I know doesn't look great at first glance on my CV. I just put the start date and end date, and put "fixed term contract" next to it in brackets. You could do the same with "redundancy due to company restructure". Maybe add that it was LIFO if it was.

Do put it on your CV though, rather than waiting to explain it at interview.

You should never put any reason for leaving a job on your CV.

I don't have the reasons on my CV, but last week whilst applying online for a job, I was obliged to fill in the box stating the reason.

The last four companies I have worked for have all closed down, which was the cause of losing the job.

I can see the laughter now when my application is read and they decide not to even interview me because they "don't want him... everyone he works for shuts down!"

There are no hard and fast rules.

If you feel that you want to put an explanation for leaving a job you are perfectly entitled to put one. The example of fixed term contracts is the perfect example of this.
