How long do Credit searches stay on your Credit Record

Hi all,

I recently trialled Credit Expert and got my Credit File checked. It is actually now classed as 'excellent' scoring 999 (not sure what out of). So - I figured I would be ok applying for a 0% Credit Card. I tried one - was turned down, tried a second and again was turned down. I do have 2 existing Default Notices on my file but that has been taken into account when the score was issued.

My score has now dropped from 999 to 994 (still excellent) but was wondering how long those searches will affect my score for... and also wondering why I was turned down. Have been on the electoral role at my address for 10 years which is on file.

Any help/advice appreciated.

Turned down, most certainly, for the 2 existing Default notices.

It's been said many times on here...the 999 rating isn't worth anything. Most lenders have their own scoring system. Most (if not all) mainstream lenders won't give a credit card if you've got any defaults on your credit file.

Won't bother trying then until they are both cleared by which time am hoping to have cleared my debts anyhow!!!

    Hi abundant

Defaults stay on your file for 6 years from the date of default regardless of whether settled, unsettled or partially settled. Rather than the score issued by the CRA's a better barometer as to how lenders may view you would be to try a CC provider that do a 'soft search' pre-application - https://letmechoose.barclaycard.co.uk/ - for instance. Obviously you don't have to proceed to a full application ... but it helps to see how things are improving for you over time.

Abundant, all the credit agencies give these fantastic numbers and as you have just found out in the real world they mean very little.

Your credit file is a history folder of how you have been behaving. Are the defaults settled it may be worth looking at though some people argue there isn't any difference between the two.

Keep clearing the debts and be patient.
