Finding a mortgage advisor

Worried
How do i find a good whole of market independent mortgage advisor?
Also how do appointments with a mortgage advisor work? Would the initial appointment just be working out what we can afford to borrow and going away with the details of a few products to choose from and then coming back to arrange an agreement in principle? Would we need to have a credit check on the first visit if we are looking at mortgages based on affordability? What sort of documentation, information would we need to have with us for the first visit?

We used Personal Touch Mortgages Ltd who are a UK-wide Mortgage broker company. The guy we had for Lancashire was excellent - and discussed what we wanted from a mortgage to suit our circumstances. He came up with various options including portable mortgages, rate for 10 year or 15 year mortgages etc etc. Your initial meeting with the broker will discuss all kinds of things not just your income etc but whether you plan on mortgage holidays etc when kids come along for example.
If the excellent service we received is any indication for a uk wide company then it cant hurt to try them. But alternatively a friend or colleague may know someone locally to you.Expect the worst, hope for the best, and take what comes!!:o0 -
Personal Touch are not a broker. They are a network (and in my opinion a cowboy one - based on experience of some local PT advisers who use me for business they cannot transact as PT won't allow it or come up with obsolete requirements).I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0

We are in the process of remortgaging at the moment. We had a company called Emerald Finance to advise us. They are a whole of market, independent company. They have been fantastic. A consultant called Alan Quinn came round in the first instance and took all our details. He then went away to find the best mortgages to suit our needs (advising us on the one he thought was best). He then came back a week later with figures/details, it was then up to us if we wanted to proceed or not. There was no pressure and everything was explained in detail. There was no charge for the 1st 2 meetings.
Emerald Finance can be contacted on 0870 8519266 or e-mail alanquinn@emeraldfinance.co.uk
