Because they are married, living at the same address & therefore are dependents .....

    http://www.callcredit.co.uk/media/53054/disassociation%20form%20v2.0.pdf

"I confirm that there are no shared financial arrangements or dependencies between myself and the person detailed in Section B overleaf. We are not part of a single household in which we have shared finances such as income and/or spending.

    http://www.uk.experian.com/contactforms/consumer_onlinedisassociation.html

"I confirm that there is no active financial connection or dependency between myself and the person detailed above".
Yes, that is quite plain. The distinction is shared finances. The statements do not preclude people who are married and living under the same roof from notifying dissociation and having it respected.

I would expect these agencies to respect a notice of dissociation between married people who live under the same roof, unless the degree of financial association is significant. To me that means more than just taking their cornflakes from the same box.

We'll have to agree to disagree then ......

"You can only apply for financial disassociation if you and your partner now live at separate addresses and don't have any financial links (such as a joint bank account)"

You'll have to agree to disagree with yourself, because what Shelter Scotland says there is contrary to the quotes you yourself provided from the CRA's.

Suppose a husband and wife have paid off the mortgage, share no accounts and hate each other's guts. One has exemplary financial behaviour, the other is in deep debt because of gambling. They live in the same house but otherwise live separate lives. The Information Commissioner would not for one moment sustain a rejection of a notice of disassociation from the solvent partner - because such a rejection would be manifestly unfair.

??? sorry don't see where .... "we are not part of a single household" and "now live at separate addresses" mean the same to me.

I am obviously very dense .........

Firstly, Shelter's advice on financial disassociation is wrong. But they are a housing charity, not a debt charity.

Secondly, it is quite possible for married people to live at the same address and be separate households to all practical intents and purposes - estrangement. Equally, it is possible for an unmarried couple to live at 2 separate addresses but be living so much in each others pockets that they are effectively one household..

None of this completely determines whether there is a financial association. It is the sharing of finances which creates a financial association. Never mind what Shelter say.

Thanks for all the information. Sorry for opening up such a can of worms! I wasn't actually planning on applying for a financial dissociation from my husband, was just trying to think of things to make the burden on him due to my bad decisions less as I don't think it is fair that he shoulders the burden of them.
This is the reason why we have separate credit agreements and bank accounts, with the exception of the joint bank account where our priority bills are paid from. I realise the mortgage is an issue but I have read a few conflicting article (not here) over the last few days which make me think it isn't always the case that because people are married and live together they are automatically associated. If I remove myself from the mortgage and joint account surely that association would be dissolved, even if we still live together?
Anyway, I suppose only time will tell!
    Thanks again, Emma
