I remember my mum always getting concentrate juice in a 500ml carton when I was younger. You had to put it in a 2-3 litre jug and top it up with water. It tasted just like juice from concentrate that you buy in the supermarket today but it was much cheaper than the pre-made stuff. I wonder what happened to it. Maybe it's an Australian thing.... http://www2.woolworthsonline.com.au/Shop/ProductDetails?Stockcode=18338&name=homebrand-drink-concentrate-orange&search=orange%20juice%20concentrate

I'd just use 100% orange juice not from concentrate instead. I may try and reduce the water content by simmering it for an hour or so with the lid off.

Supermarkets used to carry small tubes of frozen orange juice concentrate, I haven't seen it in years.
Its exactly what the description implies, normally you make it up to drinking strength by adding twice the volume of water, so I'd use ordinary orange juice and reduce it by two thirds (unless the recipe adds extra water, in which case I'd reduce it until you have the quantity of orange juice plus the water.

  • How the orange sauce is made in my friends chinese takeaway is use orange squash, a good quality, like kia ora or a branded one, so use orange squash, water and cornflour., and simmer. Thats what they do, and the same with lemon sauce.

I pinned that yesterday! Yes I think it was referring to the frozen concentrate that you could get, haven't seen it recently, but haven't looked. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/804601

I remember Florida Orange frozen in cylindrical tubs. I used to make a lovely orange sorbet with a tub of that and egg whites and something else that escapes me at the moment. One of those things I would love to see back again - like frozen Lemon mousse, yummy mixed with crushed Crunchies.

The easiest way to get orange juice concentrate is to put ordinary oj in a saucepan and simmer it until most of the water content is gone. It goes thick and tastes really strong. hth

PS Asda/Morrisons sell 'Sunquick' which is a very concentrated orange squash, but it may be too sweet for your recipe

Do any of you remember the short fat white plastic tubes of concerntrated pure orange juice you could get at supermarkets in the late 70's? They had an orange plastic lid which you had to peel the lip off before you could take the lid off.
You were meant to defrost it and mix it with water to make a jug of pure orange juice (not squash), but I used to scrape away at the block with a spoon and eat it frozen. It was so sour it made my mouth sore but I loved it! Can you still buy it anywhere? I haven't seen it in years.

I tried to track this down again a few years ago and so far no luck :( It was pretty useful though and saved weight in the shopping. Most orange juice is made from frozen concentrate and put in cartons anyway, so doing this step at home with tap water is no better or worse, just cheaper and makes less rubbish to throw out.

I temember that stuff, it was very useful. I googled - looks like you can still buy it in the US... and also found another method of concentrating it

    from
    http://www.orangejuice.org/frozen-orange-juice/frozen-orange-juice-concentrate-made-in-the-comfort-of-your-kitchen/

"Making frozen orange juice concentrate though is not as hard as you would imagine. It can be done in the comfort of your own kitchen.
    Here’s how to do it:
First, pour fresh orange juice into a narrow-necked plastic container like a jug. Leave room for expansion, cover and freeze. Once the juice is fully frozen, remove the cover and suspend the container upside down over another container. Let the frozen orange juice thaw drip by drip into the lower container until there’s only ice left. Just discard the ice because you won’t need that anymore.
Next, pour back the separated juice into the empty jug and just repeat the freezing and dripping process two more times to produce a fine concentrate.
Finally, store the orange juice concentrate in a jar or put it in ice trays and freeze again.
You now have a homemade frozen orange juice concentrate to enjoy whenever you like. Try it and enjoy!"
