So what if they were irresponsible! I don't understand what you would have to gain, you still owe the money and need to pay it back?
There's no legal requirement for banks to only lend to excellent credit consumers (obviously this makes sense and is sensible to make money)
You may have had a case of not paying interest if you thought it was unaffordable a short time period after borrowing and pressurised e.g. A few days, and then returned the full amount.
However I presume you have spent the money and are trying to have it written off? You need to contact your creditors and arrange a debt repayment plan. Your life isn't over, you just need to accept that you were irresponsible and that borrowing anymore credit will be difficult for the next 6 years.0 -
You'll lose everyone's sympathy soon if you play the victim.
Forget this idea, you approached THEM and convinced them you were good for the repayments.0 -
I am appreciative of peoples support in this thread but am in no way looking for it and I am not trying to play the victim. I have already got a plan in place to consolidate my debts and have them payed off over the next 4 years. I understand it may sound like I am trying to dodge out of repaying loans but I am only seeking advice on what the script is with responsible lending as I dont know how it works but to be honest I think i will just leave it here, getting a hard time on a forum is the last thing i came on here for!0

How can you support a reputable, professional lending institution which flouted it's own guidelines? Lending is about affordability and the ability to pay if they can't prove they acted responsibily then they should shoulder some of the loss.
These institutions have ridden a wave that they are partly responsible for creating, some have borrowed money on the same wave and have gone to a reputable institution for advice, expecting checks and balances to be made, not just here's the money it's surely a shared responsibility. There must be thousands of lives that are currently in ruin and some of these cases on on this forum.Maybe irresponsible lending should be the next FSA challenge.
Look at how times have changed, the golden age of credit is over, even if you can afford it you need to have a plus credit rating off the scale.
The gambling game is for those who have money to burn. All credit to you for being open with the family. Good luck!0 -
If you're not looking for support, then why post? Hoping for someone to post what you want to hear?
How can the bank be irresponsible for lending you money you gambled away? Did you tell them that was your plan? Banks have lent more money to people of lower wages who have made good use of it and paid back, so would you say that was also irresponsible?? Common even you must see how cowardly this sounds.

I wouldn't get into irresponsible lending until you have a copy of your application for in front of you.
You'd be amazed how many people enhance/ forget details on applications.Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
Sidenote & not directed at OP per se...
Anyone who tries to blame the banks for their debt and money woes is a sad individual.
Here's a thought, if you believed you were being lent to irresponsibly, erm dont take the money?
There are just as many borrowers who are forever grateful to the banks for taking a punt on them and pay back as promised - as those who pi55ed it away and try to welch out by playing the irresponsible lending card.0 -
Customer applies for loan and got what he asked for and wanted.
Customer them says he shouldn't have been given it.
Sounds a bit silly to me really.
Good luck with quitting gambling by the way. Hope you have visited gamcare because they are excellent.
And giving up is very hard and often with many relapses. I know this from a friend who has had issues for years.0
