I officially get made redundant on Wednesday. However due to the fact I will get paid 9 weeks notice pay, when do I sign on. I also understand you now apply for Jobseekers allowance by 'phone. Is this correct?
My wife works 25 hours a week at the minimum wage and we have one child. Will we be able to claim anything else? Thanks in advance.

Claim on Wednesday. They will ask you for any monies which are due. This will allow you to keep your stamps up to date. You will also have to inform tax credits - you may get an increase.
  • Hi

As Cifpowers says, sign on straight away. Take your letters and notice of redundancy with the breakdown if the Pay In Lieu of Notice (Pilon) with you.

You won't receive JSA for the period of Pilon or Holiday Pay. You will however be given a certificate for your stamps and a date when to have to back to book your new claim.

If you have payment protection policies, make sure you ask to sign on straight away. Insurance policies will only pay if you are registered as unemployed so make sure that you check the policies if you have any.

Just a couple of other things to note, you won't qualify for the income based version of JSA as your ptr works "24 hours or more". If you have been working and paying class 1 conts in the last 2 tax years you should qualify for the cont based JSA(was the old UB or dole money) for a claim made in 2007 the years you would need to hit the qualifing cont levels for would be the tax years 05/06 and 04/05.
Hope you got your claim sorted.

Defo let tax credits know and check with your local council about council tax benefit. Alot of people don't realise even if you aren't on an income based benefit you can still apply for a council tax reduction on a low income basis.
