Im a noob & i have a question :)

Hi All

I have alot of debt due to splitting up with my ex partner and i have just spoken with the debt free helpline, i put the phone down an remembered i needed to ask 1 more question (typical)

The question was, if my new partner was to move in with me would my debt affect him? I want to try And become debt free in around 3 years and i am willing to offer payments but i do not want this to affect my partner.

Also i know this is wishful thinking and we have spoke about it but if we were to get married would things change??? Would he then be liable?

Thank you for reading my thread :) x

If you are financial tied then yes your credit rating affects him. If you get a joint product i.e. a bank account or a mortgage

    Scrape that reread it!

Your debt is your debt, unless you fall down and have problems then it hits his credit rating when you have joint products.

As far as being married not sure on that one
  • I have no financial ties with my new partner and i wont untill my debts all cleared..all we will share are the household bills, rent, gas, tv etc ...

At the moment the only thing you may have to be careful is if you are credit checked for the rent and some household bills reserve the right to report payments. As long as you keep on top it shouldn't be a problem

    hi helen

Who do you mean by debt free helpline?
If its a company by that name then do not enter into an agreement with them. Make sure you've sought advice from one of the debt advice charities recommended here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2077631
