How long before a debt is cleared

I received a letter from what a thought was a solicitors saying we are attempting to contact the named above person regarding a personnal matter and they have been provided with this address as being the possible residential details for the subject I was curious as the letter had my old married name on it that i havnt used for seven years and my middle initial on the letter was wrong also i dont no how they found me as i have previously just moved and never use my old name.
They informed me i owe £500 a debt from argos from twelve years ago from a previous property which i wasnt at long and have never owed Argos anything at that property.I didnt no it was a debt company as it doesnt state it anywhere,i informed them ive never had anything from Argos and dont owe them anything and my middle initial is wrong on the letter,they told me to report it to the police as fraud ang get a crime number but the police wouldt as they said id have to prove it wasnt me.What i want to no is can they do this after twelve years,how did they find me and can they send debt collectors round etc.I am very worried:(

they are lying toads.

1. if a debt is over 6 years old and no payments or written acknowledgement has been made, it is statute barred, which means that you do not ahve to pay it. I doubt even a CCJ would be resurrected by a court after this time.

2. It is the responsibility of the creditor to ensure that the person that are chasing actually owes the money, not your responsibility to to prove otherwise.

Do not phone them again and if they ring you say that it is statute barred and if you hear from them again you will report them to the OFT.

Back with a letter.

I suspect that someone used a pre-addressed mailing to get goods in your name after you left, if you name is even the right one.

Sounds like dodgy 'tracing' from a dodgy debt collection agency to me. Probably one of the Usual Suspects.

Thankyou i was just so worried as the letter just had a solicitors name on it, i dont even no how they got my address and not to have a letter for eight years in my old name and to say it was from twelve years ago and this is the first ive heard about it was a shock.Just as long as they cant prosecute me or send balifs makes me relax.Just hope i dont hear from them again.

Yes it is MacKenzie Hall,ive even phoned Argos and give the name to see if they have a record of anybody 12years ago with my name owing money as im so confused and was so worried they said they would look into in and let me no.Have i made things worse by phoning Argos.

I had text after text from Machenzie Hall, luckily have not had any debt for years and years but still kept getting these texts to ring them, kept ignoring them. They actually rang me and I then spoke to them, It wasnt my name, it wasnt my address, all they had was my mobile no. Nothing else. They soon stopped contacting me after that phone call.
