I went for a job this morning. The woman was nice, told me about the job etc. Then she said it was £6 in my hand.I looked on the job centre website and this is what it said about the job:
Wage
NEGOTIABLE, EXCEEDS NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE
Hours
7 - 7.5 PER WEEK, SATURDAY ONLY, 9:30AM - 4PM
Duration
Permanent
Date posted
09 March 2012
Pension details
No details held
Driver with their own car preferred, due to our location and as there will be some travel involved in the role.
Applicants must be computer literate, and ideally you will have an interest in antiques and curios.
Duties will include dealing with the public, taking photographs, and some computer work (primarily on eBay).
I know tomorrow if I get the job or not.I am not happy with it being cash in my hand (£36).
If I dont get the job is it worth letting the job centre when I have my interview?

What is your issue about it being cash in hand? Is it because you think it is dodgy? Your employer can pay cash in hand as long as they declare it to HMRC, as they usually also have to pay employer tax/NICs. You don't want to end up without this being done for you, so if you get the job and decide to take it, I'd phone up HMRC and declare the new job to them. Also I'd write them a letter to make sure they know the new employer should be sorting their contributions for you. Or, could it possibly be that they class you as self employed? Meaning they don't have the same responsibilities, and you would just go ahead and declare yourself self employed to HMRC and declare your income each year also.0

I havent got a issue with cash in hand. But the way she was talking she wasnt going to declare it to HMRC OR NICS.Plus I dont want to get in trouble with my council, job centre or the tax man.I go along with it if I get the job and have £36 in my hand and hope no one finds out or she puts it through the books.0

You could declare it, but the issue is that it might be an uphill struggle for you to deal with an employer who is willing to ignore their obligations. That said, would an employer that does not play by the rules really advertise through the job centre? I think you'd be right to discuss with the job centre so they can make their own enquiries.0

Declare the money and you will be classed as self employed.
Please note that by doing this you will to be getting paid less than minimum wage. It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0 -
If the "employer" is paying cash in hand therefore not registering it, we can assume other areas will be dodgy too :-
1) It requires car use. What if you have an accident? Getting business use or not?
2) How are you going to claim mileage expenses back?
3) If the employment is off the books, these hours can't be used by tax credits etc.
4) Your NI won't be up to date
5) She probably won't have employers liability.
I can't see how the SE argument works either as you are doing just this job for this one person, and you can't sub-contract out etc.
Dodgy. I would report them to the JC+ and HMRC.
D70How about no longer being masochistic?
How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?0 -

You would have to declare this to the jobcentre whether it's cash work or paye work. The pay is the same either way. You can keep £5 and the rest is deducted from your JSA. Is it now worth doing? Probably not.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

The "car preferred .. as there will be some travel involved in the role" would concern me. Make sure your insurance covers whatever you'll be doing - and make sure that the increase in the cost of your insurance doesn't wipe out whatever you'll be earning.0

With fuel heading for £7 a gallon, can you drive around for an hour in your own car for £7 ?
Basically any job that involves using your own car and not paying at least as a very minimum 50p a mile is having you subsidising a poor business plan.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
