Dyeing hair at home

Going to the hairdresser is far too expensive, so I'm thinking of trying home dye. Is it as good? I've never done it as my own hair is almost black (apart from the grey bits lol) and I always thought you couldn't use home dye on such dark hair.

What would be a good brand to try, that's easy to use? I'm think maybe something that's wash-in, wash-out? I always used to get mahogany or plum highlights through my dark hair, but right now I'd settle for hiding the grey!

i usually use the boots brand dyes because im cheap lol but recently tried the foam dye in the pink and white box (cant remember brand but they have alot of adverts atm) it was really good, and i will be sticking to foam dyes as i didnt have any missed bits, blended in really well and didnt smell too bad

  • Nice & Easy is a great semi permanent. Also Schwarzkopf Country Colours is great too. Both of these are really cheap as well & give great coverage.

I prefer semi permanents because if you don't like the colour your not stuck with it because it washes out. Also they ain't as harsh on the hair as permanent dyes.

Although, if you have a lot of grey, I find the perma works better. Harder to cover grey when there's more of it. Clairol perfect 10 here :)

I've switched to Superdrug own brand foamy stuff as it was on offer - cheap and still covers the greys! I've started using the foam at hubby's request as I normally flick it around the place, but he helps to scrub it off around my hairline.

But just give it a go - you'll never know otherwise! And you can always change it if you don't like it!

No wash-in wash-out will cover grey, you need a longer-lasting semi-permanent or a permanent, the box will say if it claims to be able to cover grey hairs. Then it's easy enough to just try a few till you find one that suits, and don't forget the patch and strand tests!

And personally I'd never try to lighten my hair at home, would always go for a similar shade to the natural colour or darker. Forgotten which ones I used now, think the box had red on it... It was a permanent one though, which I'd not use now. The semi-permanent gradually fades out which looks better than permanent dye growing out in a big tidemark!
  • I have grey in my hair & I find Nice & Easy semi covers it well. Also Scwarzkopf Country Colours covers greys well too.

Obviously, grey hairs are easier to hide if you have blonde hair.
