Granny Tax Hysteria

People should email/write to their MP`s over this and tell the Tory/Lib ones they won`t be getting their vote at the next election.
ie:
Dear xxxxx
After yesterday`s budget with the freezing of age related tax allowance, I would just like to say if this is not reversed by the next general election, you will have just lost my votes.

Seems fair enough to me. Pensioners avoided tax increases under the last govt which increased NIs rather than income tax.
The aggressive increases in the personal allowance for everyone under this government means there's no need to have a higher personal allowance for pensioners anyway. Note that (1) pensions are rising faster than wages anyway and (2) anyone who only has the state pension will not pay any tax at all.0 -

Fair to give to the millionaires and take off the millions.
(We`re all in this together except the millionaires)0 -

Those two words mean one thing..........TAX, anyone who thinks that NI has any place on a modern payslip is having a laugh.
There should just be one deduction on a payslip called TAX, it would be far clearer to everyone.
National Insurance DOES NOT just pay for the Health Service as a lot of deluded people think, it is NOT ringfenced like that so get over it.
It would be perfectly simple to TAX in this way.
Actually, I've never understood why there is the distinction between tax and NI, everyone who has paid tax should be qualified for the state pension (so no need for those who have to top-up NI contributions)
Anyways, was amazed at the granny tax hysteria this morning as well. People get very upset when benefits to elderly and children get cut but they are the ones with most benefits anyways, so everyone should be part of the cuts0 -
@2010 Given that the treasury's own stats indicate that the 50% tax rate is basically raising no revenue whatsoever, and no money is being taken off pensioners at all, your comment amounts to a media soundbite. There is no point having certain tax bands for ideological reason when they are counter productive in practice.
Anyway, pensioners will moan about this, and then vote Tory at the next election, as usual.0 -
If its a "Granny" tax, does that mean Men dont pay it?0

It may seem harsh but it won't be pensioners who rejuvenate the economy.
The young generation are the ones who will face all the challenges. Shifting the mentality to one where working is always seen as better than being on benefits is going to a long tough slog.
Many pensioners will have gained through the housing boom of the last couple of decades too. Swings and roundabouts ?0 -
They were taxed when they earned it, they were taxed on the interest on it and then they get taxed again when it is paid back to them.
Just how many time do these greedy pigs want to tax the same money ?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Or being till more cynical
Perhaps this will cause those of pensionable age who are still working to quit & make way for younger people to work.
As long as tax allowances are being increased for non pensioners I see nothing unfair about this at all.Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits0
