Gaz, I think you need to complain to the Information Commisioners Office, a Government body responsible for regualting how companies hold information on you. One of the key rules is that the information should be accurate and that you should be able to deal with any organisation that has flagged adverse info against your credit file.
The ICO have a template 'complaint form' on thier website. Use this to unpick the responsibilties Orange have with reguard to the issue.
It could take some time to sort. If the debt falls off in 6 months, maybe just wait until then instead?
Don't bother arguing about the debt itself in terms of 'my ex didn't pay it' as this would be an irrelevance, because a debt you are wholly or partly responsible for cannot be ignored just because of some personal problem between you and your ex, otherwise everyone in arrears would use this same loop hole to escape thier responsibility - it's a little like crashing your car and blaming the radio presenter for inflaming you with a comment they made.
