If you don't want to get tied in for a year, you're best off either trying to haggle down to 6 months etc (as above) or (also as above) just finding a local sports centre that will let you pay as you go - which might be more expensive, but you can't expect to get the cheapest price if you're unwilling to play the game (and get tied in...)0 -

I guess it varies but we have 3 local council gyms that offer either PAYG or subscription. 1 of them is great, 1 is good but is a little rowdy and the other has fairly filthy changing rooms & is also rowdy.
Personally went for a private gym which has a 3 month notice period within the first 12 months and then drops to 1 month after that which is reasonable enough in my book plus they were totally up front about it (you had to sign against each of the 10 key rules separately) so was totally my choice to sign up (they will suspend a membership if you sustain an injury etc)All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

The other alternative is to join a gym such as LA Fitness, Virgin/Esporta where you might be able to transfer to a another gym when you move (depends where you go).
I'm a member of the gym at my council's local leisure centre (although the gym is private) and I just have to give 1 months notice without tie in.
Some gyms may also offer a pay in advance scheme where you could pay for the 6 months now. - best bet as others have said is find a gym and haggle with them, I'm sure they'd rather have you than not....after the January buzz my gym's empty - went Sunday and I was the only one there for 2 hours!!0 -
There are a couple of branches of Esporta in leeds if you do find you can't cancel0
