I don't earn enough to be in the 50p tax bracket & neither does anyone I know. Nevertheless I'm gobsmacked at the naked envy in the people who support it.

Serious question for anyone who supports the 50p tax band: When you go down the pub with any of your friends or family who happen to earn more than you, do you insist that they pay more than their share because of that? And spit bile & fury if they don't?

If not, then why do you support the 50p tax rate?

I would be surprised if they didn't. But I don't go drinking with the greedy classes.

The point of progressive taxation is that the more money you have, the less essential will be the things you spend it on. What isn't explained is why these entrepreneurs feel it's so important to make more money so their wives can add more £1000 handbags to their collections.
"It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis

Is the concept 'It's their money' completely alien to you?

If so, presumably you won't mind if I borrow your car on Sunday?

Going back to his intent his argument against 5p tax reduction was simple. the people earning this much don't need it, the response from government..... silence.

Silence is often the best retort. If you want to paint yourself as anti business on a global level not UK. Then you don't make statements like that.

Bob Diamond could move Barclays head office to New York. Likewise Prudential and HSBC move to Hong Kong.

Then how much tax revenue and national insurance do you collect in total?

    ZERO........

If you actually believe that rich=greedy then you are simple-minded.

Other than bilious tripe stereotype what do you ACTUALLY know about what anyone "rich" spends their money on? Last time I heard, Bill Gates & Warren Buffet, both of whom have been the richest man on the planet or near enough, gave away almost their entire wealth. Tens of billions of their own money in both cases. And they live in a country that would applaud them for earning it. And keeping it.

What have you given away lately from your own wealth? I'm talking about voluntary donations.

If you have 3 kids you now pay a marginal rate of 67% between 50 and 60k on paye - nice. Of course with 2 earners on 49k each the marginal rate is only 42% if either of them earn any more, double nice.
    I think....

I read once that envy is second only to self pity as a dangerous emotion.

It appears you are quite well armed.

Rubbish, he had an easy target.

Really? I Perhaps you need to reconsider.

You can either have a policy based on fact and economics or a pie in the sky policy. Both the OBR and HMRC have indicated that a cut in the top tax rate is likely to cost ~£100million.

Are there people who decide not to start a business because they think they will have to pay a lot of tax if it is sucessful?

You're missing the point. People who decide to start businesses will start businesses.

It is where they chose to locate them that is important, especially in today's world where there is free flow of goods, capital and talent.
