Maternity Cover Roles...?

There seems to be quite a few 'Maternity Cover' Jobs in my local area.
Has anyone ever taken one?
Does anyone know what percentage of mothers never actually return to work... or return only at part time? Meaning that you effectively get the role permanently (Assuming they like you)?

I'm permanently employed at the moment and weighing up if it's a bit high risk.

I took one once, and the lady came back to work but then my job created an extra post so that I could stay on - so it worked well for me!

It is undoubtedly a risk - a lot of women will come back at least for a certain amount of months as otherwise they may need to pay back a proportion of their maternity allowance. But if the job is with a big company and you put your head down and work hard it makes it more likely that they'll try and find another place for you. It also means you can apply for internal vacancies (and often as an internal candidate you'll get preferential treatment) ...

Yes but you give up a permanent role on the off chance?

If the OP was unemployed I would say go for it but as she isn't I reckon she would be barking to even consider it

If it is in an area which could advance your carrer and the role you are in now is not satisfying then I would say it is worth considering, although I'd keep a nest egg for the end of the maternity cover just in case.

I wouldn't leave a permanent job for one at the moment, not unless it was in an area you really thought was amazing.

I've done one and it was frustrating, a year and the person came back, as expected, not a problem as such there - but I found the Co. didn't care about my prospects/career enhancement, I got more crap landed on me because I was only there short term and I couldn't make many changes to the role as it wasn't 'my' job and I didn't benefit from the improvements I made. I wouldn't choose to do one again unless nothing else came along as at the end of it you are back to square one again with very little thanks as a 'fill in'. However, depending on the manager, things could be very different.

I had an interview for a maternity cover role which was a 6 mth role with the view to it being 12 mths and is she never came back it could if both parties agreed take the role full time.

The man interviewing me was amazed when I said people in full time employement wouldn't really leave to go a 6 mth role and that I was commited to the position as I was better off to ramin there for the full 6mths cover (never got the job however).
