Finding local businesses?

Is there any way to find out the names and addresses of local businesses? I am planning on sending out speculative CV's but finding all the local business is a task in itself.

do you get a Thompson directory delivered where you live? Thats what I use, I started at A, researched the co online and if I think it would be possible for me to work for them send my cv and cover letter. By email wherever possible to save money.0

I did this for/with my boyfriend but we do live in a small ish city so it would easier enough to do. Probably the easiest way is to see if there are any business centres near you. If you go to their website they quite often have a list of the business within them, or if the receptionist is particularly nice like ours is, she may let you post your CV into each company's post pigeon hole?
Good luck!0 -

I was waiting on this, If you live in a city yep no problem, We have loads of businesses in the back of beyond over here, My last firm was 10 mile from anywhere, I'd never heard of it before until they advertised.0 -
Your local library should have local business directories - unfortunately I can't rember what it is called (IT's not yellow pages or anything like that). At least they used to in the reference sections.0

Just has a quick look and it looks like Dun & Bradstreet's Business Register and Kompass Regional may be what I was thinking of as they are mentioned on some library sites.0

I live in the back of beyond and have worked for firms in the middle of nowhere. What I meant is its time to put the miles in and go looking.
Whilst there are directories, they are far from a complete list and IME I've found work merely by knocking on the door at the right time as opposed to just ringing up where you can be fobbed off by the receptionist.0
