So the bottom line is - you can't get sent to prison for owing money is that right? If so how come *some* people get sent to prison for not paying the council tax?
Whilst we are on the subject - if you do owe money and you go to prison - does that wipe the slate clean and you no longer owe the money? or do you still owe the money and now can't get a job coz you been in prison?
Would be interested to find out.... not for me for a *friend*...

Technically, you can get sent to prison for non payment of Council Tax - but these would be extreme circumstances where you have the money available but are willfully refusing to pay (or other such circumstances). However, it is a fair old process to get to that stage .. a judge will look favourably on any attempts to pay .. however small.

I believe you are still required to pay any outstanding amounts for council tax after imprisonment :o

Yes Tori is correct even if you go to prison you still have to pay the outstanding amount once you are released otherwise many would just go to prison knowing that the debt has been written off. but it is only debts such as council tax and others similar thet you can be imprisoned for.
