which treadmill?

Options
I'm looking for a treadmill for up to £500. I decided on the proform 705 ZLT but then looked at reviews of seller sweatshop.com and that put me right off. Next i thought about the horizon T102 the warranty is good but then i read its only good for walking on. I want a powered incline good to run on with varied programs and a good warranty that will be repaired at my house should it break down. Any advice greatly received.

  • I found Treadmilldoctor.com useful. It has a forum where members discuss the pros and cons of different makes. It is USA focused though.

It depends on what you want from one. Assuming that you are a slow to average runner looking to get fit and improve then I found the minimum you should look for is a 2.5KW motor, 18KPH (about 11mph) max speed with a variable incline.

The running bed should be at least 1.2m long and 40 cm wide. Make sure it can take your weight.

From the big companies - Reebok has a decent reputation for their more expensive machines, but I bought a Chinese make which fit the specs above and it has lasted me well for four years and cost half the price.

Caveats: When checking the power output - make sure the figure is for sustained output rather than peak. If you are heavy and running up an incline, the belt is pulling that weight.

Also be dubious of the phrase "semi-pro" , "light commercial" or anything that hints that this personal training equipment is just that bit more sturdy than average. It means nothing and is just marketing.

As regards a wide variety of programs. How often do you use the programs on your microwave. People tend to stick with simple jogging with an incline. Don't pay extra for the bells and whistles. What counts is motor power and reliability, size, speed and nice thick steel bars to take the pounding.

Finally - storage and delivery. Nothing wrong with the ones where the bed folds vertically. A little heavy to lift, but good for cleaning under it.

If it is going to be delivered - choose a company that expressly says their van will have two people who will put it where you want. This is a big, heavy box.

I got mine - a nordictrack T7 from ebay for £380. It is refurbished, but was pristine and has worked perfectly, I think it did come with 1 year warranty. It is very sturdy (my OH hammers it) goes up to 18kph and 10%. I would recommend it, I see the same model is available from Boots.com for £599

so with the points offer is not much past £500 if you don't want the have the risk of ebay?
Whether you think you can, or think you can't, you are usually right.
