V5 question - please help, I'm panicking!

Hello,

Today I spent all my savings on a second hand citroen picasso, which I bought off autotrader through a private seller. Its nice and tidy and I am pleased with it. The lady that I bought it off is classed as a trader and sells them from her home. I filled in the V5 with "new keeper" details in her company and she explained what I had to do with it (ie. send it off). The V5 was not in her name but the previous owner as she only just bought it in January to sell it on and didn't want another owner added to the logbook. On getting home I checked the V5 and on the back it requires the registered driver (which appears to be someone in London) to have signed it and the new keeper then also has to sign it - which I have done. However the registered driver hasn't........ what should I do, should I just go into the post office and get my road tax and send off the V5 wthout the registered keepers signature or should I do something else? I am really panicking about this.

If anyone could help with some advice that would be great.
Many thanks
Fusar

Well, a couple of things - first, the seller/trader should have sent it off instead of yourself. It doesn't sound like that's the case but that's not a big deal.

Also, if you have the full V5, the yellow part in the top righthand corner of the document should be missing as that is the part that a trader is supposed to send in when they acquire the vehicle to confirm that the previous owner has sold the car. If that one is indeed missing I'd be tempted to send it in as it is...

I have had 4 cars in the past year, I can assure you its the buyer that sends off the V5
  • No it isn't in the case of buying privately - have a look at the red section of on page 3.

The idea is that the seller sends it off so the buyer can't just drive off into the sunset, disappearing forever and leaving the seller liable for any kind of fine they buyer incurrs. If your seller can't be bothered to do this that's an entirely different kettle of fish.

The buyer gets the little green strip, that's it.

Why did you buy off a trader pretending to be a private seller?

Hi, thanks for all of your replies.

Sorry, I must of not been clear, the lady was a trade seller, but sold them from her own home. I think she did it on a regular basis.

    Thanks
