what should wedding guests wear?

hi all hope you can help me.
as a bit of background i havent been to a wedding as a day guest for about 25 years, and things have changed a LOT since then.
i'm going to a wedding next month with my fiancee, we are very much 'just about day guests' we are on the furthest away table alongside the grooms parents next door neighbours.
dilemma is this: as neither of us have been to weddings for a long time, fiancee was a witness at her sister's registry office wedding about a decade ago and the last wedding i went to in the daytime was 1986 roughly, neither of us know what to wear. is shirt and tie with a pair of suit pants ok for a bloke (i am nearly 31, fiancee is 27, the couple are mid 20s and not at all traditional), the bride is a bit snobby but thats easily ignored.
i dont own a suit as due to a couple of illnesses my weight fluctuates, i own pants for work (they are all black) and a wardrobe full of shirts and ties
fiancee has indicated she will buy something

A shirt & tie and smart pants are suitable for a wedding, some will wear a suit jacket others won't. I don't think you'll stand out from the crowd. Have a nice time

thanks
will do my best. before i got with my fiancee i went out with the bride's best friend from high school, we stopped seeing eachother and within 2 weeks she was with someone else and 4 weeks later pregnant with his baby, and whats more- she is an evening guest, and is now engaged to the bloke, very awkward lol 0 -
Ooh awkard! However at least you will have your fiancee on your arm and the bride can't think that much of your ex otherwise she wouldn't just be coming to the evening

Smart trousers shirt and tie will be fine. My oh doesnt own a suit either so he has always worn trousers shirt and tie and has always looked very smart and no one has ever said anything.0

As others have said, no jacket will be fine.
I got married last month and it was quite cold so my uncle put a hoody on! I wouldn't suggest this, but half way through people will take their jackets off anyway!
As a woman I would buy something new, us girls like wearing new clothes
