Inland Revenue Minimum Payments!

Just been reading the fairly small print on my Child Tax Credit final decision for last year and found that although they owe me 1p it says on the back page "This is less than the amount we can pay so you will not receive it." You may think me mad but this phrase caught me by surprise. Apart from not liking the way the sentence was phrased, how can they not give me money that is mine. Petty I know but I got to thinking how many other pennies out there so I phoned and asked what the minimum amount is and why can't they pay it. I have mine paid direct into my bank in monthly instalments so they wouldn't have to send a cheque, just alter a number on a computer. When I phoned the very nice lady didn't know and said it can vary (confusing in itself) so she asked a couple of colleagues. I think even she was surprised when one replied £23 and the other replied £26. This is a lot of money, it all adds up, surely this is our money, what would happen if we didn't pay them? Don't know if I am on a wrong track here but thought it might be worth asking.

  • Hi,

If your entitlement is under £26 for the year, then they will not pay out.

    Hope this helps

  • Glad someone agrees, this can't be right. It must all really add up, where does it all go? And this is money that belongs to the people that need it the most.

At christmas i received a tax bill for 88 pence .
They did say because it was a small amount I didnt have to pay it now and I could add it to next years bill .However they MAY charge me interest .
