Have you tried to work out what she's doing to wreck her shoes so quickly? One of my foster children scuffed her school shoes very badly within days, then I discovered she was going on the tyre swings in the playground and dragging her feet as it "felt nice". A firm word with her and an explanation of how it caused such bad damage to her shoes was enough as she was a fussy kid who liked to look smart:D

I'll be buying her two pairs for when she starts secondary school in September so I can spread the wear between two pairs, if her feet get wet (and considering how far she's got to walk when she gets off the bus there's a good chance of wet feet especially in the winter) she has another pair to wear the following day. I don't have an airing cupboard to dry them out overnight like my mum had when I was growing up.

I don't have an airing cupboard either, but find if I stuff shoes with newspaper and leave them beside the radiator, they do dry out completely overnight, if that helps. My DS1 has managed to capsize his boat a couple of times whilst canoeing, and this has worked even on his trainers which have been soaked to that extent. Just as well really as at that time he only had one pair of shoes at a time :D.

I might be inclined in your position to buy one pair of sturdies for everyday wear and one pair of cheapies for emergencies i the sturdies did get wet and couldn't be dried overnight. I'd be surprised if she could wear through something like DMs before she outgrew them, however hard she is on her shoes, so two pairs might be an expensive luxury.
  • Does she have problems with her walking? Because of my condition I tend to walk on the sides of my feet, which quickly wears down shoes. Your lucky it isn't a pair of £150/£200 per of UGG boots like it is with me (they are the only HS shoes I can get my feet into now)

I have exactly the same problem with my DD (13). The only shoes which seemed to last any length of time were the Clarks ones I bought in September, and she managed to lose one on the way home from school!!!! It has been driving me nuts!
I found a pair of Clarks Inca shoes on ebay for £16 and they are perfect. She has had them for about a month and not even managed to scuff them yet.
Mind you, I have told her that if she kills these ones, then she gets absolutely no say whatsoever in the next pair of school shoes she gets. That should hopefully make her take a bit more care.

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

I second this idea. She may grow another size pretty quickly, and neither pair would have gotten a good use then.

I used to be the same as OP's DD. It was because I made the most of my playtime, and ran around playing football, netball, anything I could really. Fun and healthy, but not so kind on the shoes. Drove my Mother mad! :rotfl:Thankfully, for her, when I hit secondary school I stopped running around at playtime so much because it wasn't cool.

Still quite heavy footed on tho shoes though. Like another poster, I keep one pair for work. A pair of trainers for to and from work, and general trips to the shops etc, and some pretty shoes for going out. The going out shoes are in the best condition! lol. I tend to go through work shoes every 6 months or so, but my last pair of trainers lasted me 3 years! :D

OP I think you should buy Clarks shoes on the sales... I usually buy my daughter's school shoes from them in the sales, as cheap as £9 or £12 and they last the whole year.
I started doing this since last year and we have saved lots... today I noticed her soles were thin and broken at the back although the rest of the shoe is fine, so tomorrow she will be wearing new shoes that cost me £9.
I don't do cheap shoes with her, the only time I did, they did not last more than 2 weeks and learnt my lesson... buy quality and buy in the sales.

  • My mum became stepmum to a 12 yo girl with downs syndrome, she seems very heavy on her shoes, I think partly because of the way she walks.

Mum buys all her shoes in sales/ebay/amazon, and only Clarks/Startrite also a German company called Schuh etc. Even if she sees a size too big, if they are a good deal she will buy them anyway and store them as this her step daughter destroys within weeks anything from the highstreet.

I too have a teenaged DD who is brutal on shoes. She's the same size as me and but weighs about 10 kg less, but still if she would on ocassion borrow a pair of my shoes/boots to complete an outfit they would always come back looking haggard! After a treasured pair of Ecco boots came back all scuffed after one trip into town I said no more. I've had those boots 4 years without a mark - not sure what she does to them - she's even a ballerina!!!
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!
