    This is quite common when you take a loan with your own bank.
    They know exactly how you manage your money, if you are using your overdraft (and extending it), they will KNOW you cannot control your spending so you often withdraw your overdraft.

    The loan money they deposit will shrink by the overdraft amount and your O/D becomes £0

    This is the biggest risk, without buying single expensive items you need the banks money to bolster your income so taking on a loan just makes things worse (more outgoings when you cannot manage already).

    Your decision to up your income to drive down your debt is the best decision. You can't borrow your way out.
