Debt you are unaware of...

Hi, am new to here...
My son has gone to Australia for 12 months to find work. When he left he cancelled his mobile phone contract with Orange owing them around £250. He is aware of this debt but I am unable to contact him at the moment as he is fruit picking in the middle of nowhere
I have made Orange aware of the situation but they have passed it over to a debt recovery company.
His is unaware of a debt recovery letter that has arrived which states that "even if it is not read by you" they can start proceedings in the County Court.
Is this true???
And what would be the best course of action if I can't contact him soon, or he can't pay in full.
Thanks in advance for any help you might give

But he IS aware of the debt, so why isnt he paying it.

Is there no way you can pay this and him pay you back.

It's not really fair of him to leave this on your doorstep.

He is going to come home in 12 months and his credit will be trashed for 6 years.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
