Tip delivery person

Hi,
I haven't lived in the UK for many years, so these things don't come naturally to me. I know you're supposed to tip in restaurants about 10%-15% (it comes in the bill, so no problems there), but in other services?
For example, do you normally tip the Tesco / Sainsbury delivery person? - you're already paying £5 for delivery! How much is appropriate?
What about the pizza guy? I normally order around 8.50. What would be appropriate?
Thanks.

I give a "severance" box to the coal delivery man when I stop ordering for the summer. I suppose a Christmas/new year box is more in order than a weekly tip if you're so inclined.

    Cheers

I don't think you should tip people, a kick up the ar*e is usually sufficient :)

  • i would not tip tesco delivery etc as they are on a average and you are already paying for delivery but i do tip pizza or take away delivery by a pound if i feel they make it in god time enough for my food to be hot as they aregenerally on less than average and every little helps. but saying that i used to be a waitress so survived on tips, but i was good.

  • Never, ever, ever ip in his country and very rarely when I am on holiday. People get paid.

In Las Vegas a couple of years back we took a taxi to my mums hotel but the drivers driving was crap and his attitude was awful (nothing new there then from an american!) so at the end just got out and gave him the correct fare. "What about a tip" he said so I replied "what about it?" and walked off.

Don't let Britain become a nation were a tip is expected for anything and everything.

I don't tip the asda delivery people. In fat outside restaurants the only people I give a cash gift to (at Christmas) are the bin collection men (cos they got a filthy job) and the postman (because he's been our postie for many years and he's absolutely fab).
  • i dont believe a tip is expected but if you recieve good service and want to tip then you should, it is up to each individual, i like to be polite and nice, some people dont.

I tip the pizza delivery girl because I know she is on a low wage, usually I will round it up to the nearest convenient amount ie. an £8.50 bill becomes £9 or £10 if I havent got change.
I also tip the postie about £5 at christmas because he's a lovely man who will go out of his way to help me and he always has a smile even in peeing down rain, so I think he's worth a little extra. Plus he never expects it so I like to see his face when I give it to him :)
I very rarely tip in restaurants unless the service is outstanding. I know they arent on great pay but I just cant bring myself to tip for only adequate service, it just goes against the grain.

I tip the paper boy, postman and bin men at Xmas. All get a £20. value for money because the paperboy knows to make sure the papers go right through the letter box and the bin men take out the bins if I forget to put them out. Recently moved house and this postman needs to learn to revisit with signed parcels at the end of his round if I'm not in earlier, or he will get a reduced tip next year.

    pizza people get £1.
