Tesco Gift Card Disappeared After Checkout

I received two Tesco gift cards as a present, one for £50, the other for £100.
I decided to use them to purchase a fridge from Tesco Direct, totalling £268.97, delivery was free so £19 was discounted. That left £249.97.
I entered the giftcard numbers and 4 digit pins into the checkout. That worked fine - £100 was minused, £50 came off too.
The checkout said - Total left to pay £99.97, entered my credit card and clicked proceed with order. So I authorised the £99.97 to come off my credit card.
When my credit card statement arrived I have been charged the full amount.
As two weeks had gone by and when I placed the order the giftcards were taken off, unfortunately the gift cards were thrown away.
Contacted Tesco to be told if I got the original receipt or order number when the gift cards were purchased, they could find out the gift card numbers and then credit the £150 back onto my card. Phoned again and spoke to a different lady, gave her the order number when the gift cards were purchased, she said the dept she needed to talk with where closed so she would call me back the next day (today). She didn't call back so I had to ring up again - spoke to another person who didn't have a clue about the subject I was talking about, said she'd email the lady I spoke to and get her to call me back. She rang about 1/2 hour later. Said there was no way of finding the gift card numbers from the original order number (the first lady advised me to find this and said it could be done!)
So what can I do - they say there's no proof of the gift cards anywhere. The giftcards were on the order when the checkout went through but somehow disappeared by the time Tesco received the order. I only authorised £99.97 to come off my card and they've taken £249.97. Can I do anything?! Anyone else had similar problems?
Thanks in advance.

Could the person who gave you the gift cards contact Tesco with their receipt? Tesco should have a record of which gift card numbers were issued for each transaction, in a similar way to their clubcard voucher records.

Not sure whether that would help, possibly others can suggest something more helpful.

    Good luck.

Hi Libra10. Thanks for replying so quickly :) That's what we thought and what the original first lady I spoke to said...get the order/receipt number and Tesco would tell us the gift card number. The other lady I spoke to today said they can't find the gift card numbers from the order/receipt number. Tesco sound confused amongst themselves. I think it may have to go higher in the ranks in Tesco, surely they keep records.

I would expect Tesco to record the giftcard numbers sold for each transaction.

Just looking at their giftcard terms and conditions -

Have noticed - You can check your Tesco Gift Card balance on your receipt, by phoning 08450 757757 or online by clicking Check your Gift Card balance.

Could the person who gave you the card phone this number, or go online to check this information?

There's also a list of FAQs here, but nothing seems to apply.

The best bet seems to be to phone the above number and see whether they can help.

  • Go on the same tesco site you used before and start the process of making an order. Get to the part where you have to type in the Gift Card numbers. Try double clicking on that box.

Depending on your web browser and the setting you have it may well show you the gift card numbers. Works for me, showing a gift card I used about 6 months ago.

Write down the numbers and then call Customer Services and see if they will credit you the £150

I've done that with input boxes and it has worked for me too. But sometimes it only works if you type in the first number. If you don't know it just start with 0, if nothing comes up delete it and try a 1 etc. etc.
