I must be very professional then, as I`ve been running my small business for over 20 years.

And being honest, I didn't do much research into the business before I started. I also knew that I was up against "the big boys". The reason I`ve survived is mainly due to being fairly cautious and be willing to change the service I provide as and when required.

Slightly OT, but how many people do you employ on a full time basis?

And what was your initial investment to start the business?

But I don't see the big chains taking over the closed pubs either. They've got all the professionalism and know-how and all that, but still they look at vacant premises in a pub-free zone and fail to see a business opportunity. Because the prospective customers haven't got any money.

And it'll get worse before it gets better. I saw two closed tanning salons yesterday. Thought they'd be the last to go.

    Zero, and very little.

I think this thread has gone way way off topic.

The purpose of this thread is to support the "fairytale" that there are no bad debts in the U.K., never was any bad lending and certainly no problems watsoever with the lending practices of UK Banking institutions.

Everything is rosy in the U.K.

    Harsh, but true. ;)

Despite the "failure", I'm quite happy.

Yes, there seem to be lots of people not declaring their true income, apparently. Hurrah !

But the difference in cost between what a chain restaurant pays for a steak or a potato and what an independent restaurant pays for an identical steak or potato is surprisingly small.

Where do you get this from?

The poor in society will tell you that it's the rich set, with their offshore accounts and armies of accountants and their tax havens. Every trick to outwit government legislation is fair game would be their complaint.

The rich in society will point to the legions of apparently poor people working cash in hand whilst claiming benefits; sub-letting their council property and living undeclared with their partner; leveraging the compensation culture for all it's worth.

"They are worse than me, so I don't feel so bad".

Radical thought here, perhaps both extremes are bad ?
