Foolproof crumble topping please!

I'm making apple and blackberrry crumble his evening for some friends, using fruit that we picked and froze last autumn.
My crumble topping always seems to coagulate into a sort of brick on top of the fruit and I've tried so many different recipes I've lost count but with the same result.
Does anyone have a foolproof recipe that I could try please?
